Facebook Credits
Yep, Facebook Credits are a thing. One U.S. dollar could buy you 10 Facebook Credits...so each one was 10 cents. What could you do with these Facebook Credits? Mostly buy stuff in games, but also some non-game stuff.
Facebook Credits were once on the independent-of-a-nation, virtual-currency-path, potentially set to dominate a part of the market, like Paypal or Bitcoin. Facebook Credits could be bought in 14 currencies in addition to the dollar, and were growing as Facebook started cutting out other payment options on the platform by early 2011.
In the same year, Facebook even created a subsidiary to handle Facebook Credits…but a year later, Facebook said “jk guys…we’re not going to do this Credits thing anymore…you can have your dollars, euros, and pounds back.” Why? Well, we can’t be sure, but soon after FB decided to call it quits, the U.S. government laid down the law for non-fiat currencies.
Coincidence? Maybe...but maybe not.
