Green Card

A green card is a layman's term for the ID card that gives immigrants permanent resident status, allowing them to live and work in the U.S. as long as they want.

Getting a green card isn’t easy. Some ways to get one are through family, marriage, asylum/refugee status, and through some special programs. You gotta know someone, have a proven need for a lot of help (since your own home country is threatening to you), or qualify for special programs.

Green cards are issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Why “green”? Nope, not because the USD is green, but because, from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, the cards were green (they’ve also been blue, pink, and yellow).
