Independent Agent
Mr. Shaken, Not Stirred would be in here, but he's dependent on M6 (not the Beemer...the British Secret Service).
Normally, the term applies to sellers of insurance who sell the wares of a bunch of different originators for a commission. These indie agents run their own businesses, footing the bills for their own offices and legal work and marketing. But then they get to keep all of the commish they net. They get to write off a big portion of their cars and phones and computers. And generally make more dough than a salaried employee at a larger firm.
Why? Well, generally, because they took more risk (and thus reaped more reward over time).
