Matilda Bond
Categories: Bonds
We've all gotten a good laugh from the song "Waltzing Matilda." It's the tune the rest of the world uses to gawk at weird Australian nomenclature, with lyrics that heavily feature words like "billibong" and "swagman" and "jumbuck."
In fact, the song is so aggressively associated with Australia that the word "Matilda" is used to describe foreign bonds that trade on the Australian exchange. If you were a U.S. company looking to raise money from Australian investors, you might issue some Matilda bonds.
A Matilda bond issuance would entail selling bonds on the Australian market (denominated in Australian dollars) to raise funds for a non-Australian entity.
