Monopolies exist in monopolistic markets, and the term generally leans on the notion that some markets naturally give way to monopolies. Like...markets for space exploration, where even just a basic rocket and landing pad cost upwards of a billion dollars. Huge fixed costs; no guarantees of success.
So when there is one big leader, it's usually kind of a "winner takes all" thing.
