This term doesn't refer to "points" as in "the point at which things originated"...you know, moments like The Big Bang or when someone throws the first punch in a bar fight. "Points" here refers to another name for "fees." It's a way of describing a certain kind of charge added onto loans.
Origination points and origination fees are fundamentally the same thing. They compensate the company processing your loan for the expense of doing all the rigmarole that goes into getting you through the process, and deciding whether you should get the loan or not.
