SAFE Investment Company (China)

A sovereign wealth fund represents the investment arm of a government. It comes up often with governments that generate a lot of cash from things like oil extraction (many Middle East countries have well-stocked sovereign wealth funds).

China has one, too. The SAFE Investment Company represents the Hong Kong division of this fund. It operates as a private company, though government officials serve on its board (and thus direct policy). Meanwhile, assets within the fund are used by China as a foreign currency reserve.
