7 Ways to Save Money on Insurance
Once you start paying for insurance, you're gonna do a lot of grumbling. While we do love some kinds of grumbles, we're all about making things easier for you. So here are seven ways to save money on insurance.
1. Keep a good credit score.
Your credit score is a number that tells insurance companies if you pay your bills on time. If your number is low, the insurance company won't be thrilled—and they'll charge you more.
2. Stay healthy.
There are certain things you can't prevent when it comes to health. But it's in your best interest—for like a zillion reasons—to live a healthy lifestyle. Eat the green stuff (the veggies, not the mint chocolate chip ice cream) and try to do your share of exercise. The healthier you are, the less you can expect to spend on insurance…and other bills.
3. Buckle up and drive safely.
Seems simple enough, yeah? Staying safer and not getting speeding tickets will keep your insurance costs down.
4. Compare prices—more than once.
Do your parents stick with the same insurance company for years and years? Yeah, they're probably still listening to Wilson Phillips, too. The fact is that insurance companies change over the years. You might be able to get a better deal if you do some comparison shopping. And honestly, it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes and a couple quote requests to figure it out online.
5. Get higher deductibles.
If you're generally healthy, safe, and all those other happy words, you might want to consider a higher deductible. The higher your deductible, the less you pay in insurance every month. Basically, the insurance company gives you a break because they have to pay less if something goes wrong. Just make sure you can actually afford that deductible.
6. Find out how to make yourself less of a risk.
Your insurance company loves rules—some of which can save you money. For example, some insurance companies offer discounts if you take more driving lessons or if you install a security system in your house. Make a few calls to see what kinds of deals you can get.
7. Bundle up.
Bundling up your insurance doesn't mean putting a cute parka and adorable hat on it—it means getting all your insurance from the same company. Insurance companies want all your business. Since they don't want you doing business with other companies, they'll sometimes give you a discount if you get, for example, both your car and property insurance from them.
