To infinity and beyond!
Context
This line is spoken by Buzz Lightyear in the movie Toy Story (1995).
Oh, Buzz—an eternal optimist.
Buzz considers this his catchphrase…which it is, except that there happen to be a million Buzzes in toy stores around the world. When you wind those toys up, this quote is what they all chant.
Here's the thing, though—it really does suit our Buzz's personality. Woody is kind of a downer (we love you, Tom Hanks!), and Buzz, as doofusy as he can be sometimes, keeps the mood light. "To infinity and beyond!" is the perfect anthem for a guy like that.
Where you've heard it
"To infinity and beyond!" has become kind of a new version of "Oh, the places you'll go!" People say it when they're about to embark on a big challenge as a mantra to get them motivated.
You might also recognize it from the thousands of Disney commercials it's in; we're thinking of the one where a guy shouts it while getting catapulted by a tree. (Not sure that's actually fun for the whole family?) And check this out: it even made it into the title of a fancy dissertation.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
It depends on the context, but usually when you're quoting an animated astronaut with the IQ of a potato, it's not all that pretentious.
