  • On October 2, 1872, Phileas Fogg accepts a wager proposed by the men at his club to go around the world in eighty days or forfeit 20,000 pounds.
  • Phileas leaves that evening with Passepartout on a train bound for Paris.
  • Many men in London begin placing bets that Phileas Fogg will not be able to make it back to London in eighty days.
  • Phileas catches a steamer named the Mongolia in Brindisi and takes it via the Suez Canal to Bombay.
  • When the steamer stops at Suez on October 9, Fogg disembarks to get his passport stamped, but does not care to view the scenery.
  • To pass the time, Fogg plays whist with a bunch of other folks on the Mongolia.
  • Upon reaching Bombay, Fogg and Passepartout share a train compartment with Sir Francis Cromarty, who is also taking the train to Calcutta.
  • The train stops outside of Rothal, and the passengers are forced to disembark because the railway isn't finished.
  • Fogg offers to pay a thousand pounds for an elephant to transport them through the jungle.
  • Sir Francis begs Fogg not to make the deal, but Fogg eventually offers 2,000 and is accepted.
