Character Analysis
Another snapshot, one-off character, Pop Harper has only one scene in the first chapter of the book. A depressed and stressed-out Eddie is leaving the office when he spies Pop Harper trying to repair his own typewriter. Pop delivers a spiel about how the country and the whole world are falling apart, and his typewriter, which keeps breaking, is a symbol of everything that's wrong. Pop fits well in the early part of the book, which did a lot to set up and emphasize themes of decline and decay.
