You might not agree with us, but we wouldn’t say Anne has anyone who fits the guide/mentor role. There is definitely her dad, whom she adores and sometimes feels compelled to inform of her life events, but overall her growth seems quite independent of him.

She often desperately wants a mother whom she respects—she doesn’t respect her own mama. Anne frequently writes that she is disappointed by her parents and doesn’t have any really good role models.

While many Secret Annex members are more than willing to tell Anne all of her flaws, none really take her seriously enough to guide her through her adolescence. This could partly be because she never shows people her more serious and sensitive side.
