Character Role Analysis

Bounderby

The novel has many negative characters, but most have either one redeeming quality, or at least an explanation for why they are the way they are. Mrs. Sparsit is jealous because her life hasn't turned out how she wanted; Bitzer was educated into selfishness and detachment. Bounderby, however, is the only guy who really has no reason at all to be the way he is. He is a selfish, horrid, lecherous, and nasty – and remains that way throughout the whole novel without ever learning his lesson or changing his ways.
