The American

The American fits the "antagonist" bill—he's manipulative, callous, and more than a little annoying. Plus, he's stands in opposition to Jig and her desires: she wants to get married and have a baby, he wants her to get an abortion and for them to both stay single.

But Hemingway doesn't just make this guy a cold hearted cad—the last words he says are, "But I don’t want you to. I don’t care anything about it." Does this suggest that he has decided not to press the issue any longer? If so, is he still the antagonist?
