Character Analysis
Sire is the first boy who stares at Esperanza in the way that boys stare at Marin. He makes her sort of uncomfortable, but she also enjoys the attention. Esperanza pays attention when Sire gets a girlfriend. She notice's the girl's makeup and the delicate femininity of her pink toes and long lady's bones. Sire gets Esperanza thinking about sex and wondering what he and Lois do together. It's Esperanza's first expression of her sexuality in the novel, and a major growing-up moment for her.
