Sex is a much more public affair in traditional Ibo culture than Westerners might be comfortable with. Emecheta provides several scenes of just how public it is. First, we see that Agbadi pleasures Ona so much, her screams wake all of Agbadi's wives, children, and visitors on his compound. Second, when Nnaife takes Nnu Ego on their first night of marriage, his elder brother is in the same room listening. Third, when Nnaife takes Adaku upon her arrival in Lagos, Nnu Ego suffers through Adaku's giggling and loud orgasms. But these are brief intrusions in the novel, which is otherwise dedicated to Nnu Ego's suffering and struggles.
