Douglass meets Sandy when he's working for Mr. Covey.
When Douglass first tries to stand up to Covey, Sandy gives him a root and tells him it's magical.
When Douglass goes to work for Mr. Freeland, Sandy is sent along with him.
Sandy is originally part of the plan to run away that Douglass heads up, but he eventually gets cold feet.
