Character Role Analysis
Don Pedro
Don Pedro is introduced to us as "Prince," and he’s clearly the most venerated of the soldierly troop, being more of a leader to Claudio and Benedick than a friend. Claudio defers to him on matters of love, and even when Benedick is forced to part ways with Don Pedro, Benedick does it respectfully.
Though Don Pedro is not above the deception of Don John, he is one of the play’s few mature characters. (Leonato, the other main player who’s old-ish, lacks the gravitas that Don Pedro has earned as a soldier, as witnessed in the scene where Claudio and Don Pedro shrug off a fight with Leonato and Antonio.)
