Rukmani

The protagonist is the main character of a novel, and usually one who undergoes some kind of great change. Rukmani goes through many experiences and changes, and in the end she arrives in her home with a completely different life. With no land, no husband, and entirely reliant on her children, she decides to live out her days in quiet reflection. Ruku is not necessarily involved in all of the actions that take place in the book, but she’s generally the most prominent of the characters. Events in Ruku’s life never occur in a vacuum – she is always with her children or husband, but ultimately she’s our protagonist because she’s present for all of the actions, and because she embodies the voice of the text.
