Character Analysis
Jane, or more specifically her relation to Bull, is another example of love, or sex, or companionship, or whatever you want to call it, for Sal to examine. Sal, of course, has been running around looking for a perfect woman with whom to share a perfect relationship. What would make it perfect? Well…he’s not sure. So he looks at all the relationships around him, including Jane and Bull’s, while he’s trying to figure it out.
Jane and Bull don’t waste any time with idle chitchat. They have a deep and soulful connection and never leave each other’s side. Are we making this up? Inferring it, perhaps? No. Sal tells you this word for word when he’s chilling out with the Lees. No one’s hiding the fact that the Lees have something that Sal envies.
Jane also demonstrates the negative effects of being a life-long addict to Benzedrine and other drugs. Sal describes her physical decay in detail.
