Darth Sidious

Darth Sidious is the antagonist of the film, and he's a traditional villain. He wears a cloak that makes him look like he lives in a castle in Transylvania and he's obsessed with accruing power. At one point, he tells Nute Gunray to send his droid army to wipe out all of the Gungans.

And when genocide is just another day at the office for you, you know you're a bad guy.

But Sidious is an antagonist for more than just his malicious ways. He stands in conflict with the film's protagonist, Qui-Gon, and represents an opposing force to him. Qui-Gon is the heroic force that uses his powers to assist others, whereas Sidious is the dark force that uses his powers for his own gain.
