Dr. Bernard Rieux

He is the narrator. He is the central character. He is fighting for the dignity of human life. Also, since the antagonist is actually an infectious disease, a doctor makes an obvious opponent. In a bigger picture, of course, the protagonist is all mankind in its fight for survival. But we’re dealing with an allegory here for the specific reason of avoiding this messy bigger picture.
