Annie Morel Timeline and Summary

  • Annie spends her youth in the margins of this book. We learn that she's a bit of a tomboy and that she likes it when she and Paul burn her doll, Arabella.
  • As she grows older, Annie becomes a teacher. She works away from home.
  • Annie takes her mother's side in disliking Miriam Leivers, Paul's on-again-off-again girlfriend, and seems to adopt her general moral haughtiness.
  • She tries to get Paul to stop seeing Miriam by guilt-tripping him about the pain he's causing their mother.
  • Naughty, naughty Annie.
  • But then Annie gets a love interest of her own. She meets a nice young man named Leonard and marries him, moving out of the Morel household.
  • When her mother gets sick, Annie takes care of her for two months.
  • Like Paul, Annie becomes frustrated by how tenaciously her mother clings to life. She's terminally ill, but her ticker just won't stop tocking.
  • So, Annie and Paul decide to give the woman an overdose of morphine. But it's not clear if they actually go through with this plan or not.
  • After Mrs. Morel dies, Annie goes back home.
  • This is the last we hear of her.
  • Bye, bye Annie.
