Character Role Analysis

Han Solo, Luke

Han Solo shares certain traits with Luke Skywalker, but his other characteristics contrast with the young protagonist. This makes him an excellent foil.

Both are brave and willing to fight when necessary, and neither has much love for the Empire. What set them apart are their reasons. Luke battles the Empire because he believes it is the right course of action. Han fights because there is something in it for him, usually money, preferably a lot of it.

Also, while Luke is still that wide-eyed kid from the galactic countryside, Han is older and more world weary, or is that universe weary? Either way, Luke's good nature eventually influences Han, and Luke also begins to learn about the universe Han knows so well. As a result, both characters begin to adopt the traits of the other through their shared adventure and meet each other in the middle of their initial extremes.
