- Upstairs at the mansion, Joe yells at Norma, saying that what she did was wrong and crazy.
- But Norma says that she has great pride (which Joe wounded). When Joe tells her to promise she won't do it again, she says she will try to commit suicide again, unless he loves her. Eesh.
- Joe surrenders and kisses Norma after saying "Happy New Year."
- Later, Betty tries to call the house about working on the script with Joe, but Max tells her that Joe isn't living at the mansion, although he is.
- Outside, Joe's in the pool on a raft, while Norma tells him that Max is going to send her script over to DeMille, since her astrologer has said that it's the right time.
- Norma says she's never been happier in her life, thanks to Joe. In the evening, they go out to play bridge with Norma's friends, and Joe goes into his old hangout, Schwab's drugstore, to get cigarettes for Norma.
- There, he encounters Betty and Artie. Joe's obviously uncomfortable in the tuxedo that Norma has bought him.
- Betty has good news—she says Sheldrake is interested in making Dark Windows. She says every time she tried to call Joe, someone with an accent said he wasn't there.
- Joe tells her that he's given up writing, and leaves. He goes back to the car, having forgotten to buy Norma's cigarettes.
- Back at the mansion, Norma entertains Joe by imitating Mack Sennett and Charlie Chaplin—though he doesn't seem entertained. Joe can't get Betty out of his head.
- Max interrupts to say that Paramount Studios called—it's one of DeMille's assistants.
- Norma refuses to talk to the assistant, because she thinks DeMille should have called her personally, but she assumes that Paramount is agreeing to make her movie.
