Tess is clearly the protagonist of this novel... and not just because the book is named after her. She's the moral center of the whole story. Despite the ambiguity thrown over her morals by many of the characters in the novel—including Angel—the reader is never given a chance to doubt Tess's sincerity or her inherent purity.
