Character Analysis
Melissa is everything that Chip wants. Actually, scratch that—Melissa is everything that Chip wants to be.
Chip has been fascinated with girls since a young age. He's always wished that he could "go through life softly" and "be loved like a girl" (4.116). To Chip, girls are pampered throughout life, never to worry about anything and always to receive tons of love. Of course, we don't have to tell you that this statement isn't true in real life—that one's pretty self-explanatory.
Melissa is everything Chip wants amped up to the next level. If normal girls are Sprite, Melissa is Surge. She comes from a wealthy eastern family, so she actually did live a pampered life. Plus she's bold, theatrical, and distinctly feminine—Chip actually recoils when she wears an outfit that "has a residue of gender confusion" (2.338).
Given this, Chip has a love-hate relationship with Melissa. Melissa, for her part, probably doesn't care too much. After all, she can always pick up a bag of Mexican A if she needs to unwind.
