When you hear the word "Aladdin," you probably think of the Disney classic, with the flying

carpet, the monkey…

…and the genie who somehow knows all sorts of 20th century pop culture references, even [The Aladdin characters appearing]

though he's been in a lamp for 10,000 years, weird.

But there are actually lots of different versions of the Aladdin story, and today, we're going [Several Aladdin books]

to take a look at one of them.

We'll gonna jump in kinda late in the story.

Aladdin's just used the genie to trick everyone into thinking he's a prince with a huge palace,

and he's asked for the princess's hand in marriage. [Princess appears]

This might sound like everyone's about to live happily ever after…

…but think again.

An evil magician wants the genie all to himself…

…and he's not just gonna knock on Aladdin's door and ask for the lamp. [The evil magician jumps onto the 'The End' sign and pushes it away]

Oh no…he has something a bit more devious in mind.

The magician goes to the public square, offering to exchange old lamps for new ones. [The magician with his new lamps]

Without realizing its importance, the princess passes along the old lamp belonging to the genie…

…which, surprise surprise, the magician uses to summon the genie… [The genie appears]

…and then takes the genie, the princess, himself, and Aladdin's palace all the way

to Africa.

Not exactly a fair-trade for a new lamp. [The princess looks confused]

Even if it is extra shiny.

As you might expect, the Sultan's pretty surprised when both his daughter and an entire palace

disappear…

…and he has Aladdin arrested. [Aladdin is put in chains]

He demands an explanation, and threatens to execute him.

So…y'know, not exactly the kind of thing you see in a Disney movie…

Aladdin's not exactly clear on what happened himself, but he promises that if he can't

find the princess in forty days, the Sultan can kill him. [Aladdin behind bars]

The Sultan agrees to those terms…

…and the royal executioner starts practicing his chopping technique.

Even though Aladdin no longer has his lamp, he still has a magic ring, which lets him

summon the genie. [The genie appears again]

Without the lamp, all the genie can do is take Aladdin to his new master… [Aladdin sat in a plane with the genie's head on the front]

…which still beats spending days putting up "Have you seen this crazy magician who

stole my wife and house?" posters. [Aladdin putting up the poster]

Once Aladdin figures out that the magician's to blame, he works out a plan.

He gets some magic powder and passes it along to the princess…

…who slips it into the magician's drink. [The powder being put into the drink]

The magician drinks the powder and passes out, leaving the coast clear for the genie

to take everyone, and everything back home. [The genie looking happy]

We bet the executioner was disappointed he didn't get to show off his new technique. [Executioner looking sad]

So, yup, definitely a little different and a little darker than the Disney version… [Dino pointing at a blackboard]

Though we have to admit…we would've loved to see the executioner get a big song and dance number.

We bet it would've been to die for. [Executioner singing on stage]
