Description:
We would strongly advise against getting someone a maggot farm for their birthday, but if you insist, we'll at least help you wrap it correctly.

Aiden has been racking his brain for weeks, trying to think of something to get his sister [Aiden looking confused whilst thinking about presents]
- 00:18
for her birthday.
- 00:19
At last, he’s figured out the perfect thing...
- 00:20
A maggot farm...

- 00:22
A bunch of maggot covered rotten food stuffed into a rectangular prism. [Maggots walking over rotten food]
- 00:26
What’s not to love?
- 00:27
Aiden is afraid to lift the farm to wrap it, not wanting to disturb the precious ecosystem
- 00:32
he has created inside.
- 00:33
So he decides to cut out rectangles to match the area of each face of the rectangular prism
- 00:38
the farm is enclosed in.
- 00:39
The left and right sides are super easy.
- 00:42
Aiden’s trusty ruler tells him that they’re each 6 inches wide and 8 inches tall.
- 00:46
So Aiden measures and cuts the two 6 by 8-inch pieces of wrapping paper and wraps them to [Aiden uses the ruler to measure and the wrapping paper is stuck to the side]
- 00:51
the sides of the farm.
- 00:53
Piece of cake…
- 00:54
But…uh oh…problem alert…
- 00:56
Aiden runs into trouble when he measures the front and back faces of the prism.
- 00:59
The measurements aren’t whole numbers.
- 01:01
How is he supposed to measure and cut something that isn't a whole inch?
- 01:05
What do these mysterious little lines on the ruler even mean?
- 01:08
Aiden is completely freaking out.
- 01:10
He’s sweating bullets, the maggots are sweating…everything is sweaty. [Aiden looking worried and sweating]
- 01:14
How could his trusty ruler have betrayed him like this!?
- 01:17
Can’t anyone help him?
- 01:19
Just then, in burst of smoke and lightning, the Ruler Renegades appear. [People in colorful costumes holding rulers appear after an explosion]
- 01:22
They tell Aiden that they travel the universe helping all those in measurement need.
- 01:26
They heard his call across space and time and are here to answer all his questions.
- 01:31
Aiden's like, "normally, I'd say you guys are the most pointless super heros ever, but…I'm
- 01:35
kinda glad you're here.
- 01:36
I'm getting way too sweaty."
- 01:38
The Renegades don't take offense, and tell Aiden that every inch is broken into 16 parts. [Renegades explaining next to a blackboard]
- 01:42
So each of those little lines represents 1/16 of an inch.
- 01:46
But they tell him not to sweat the teeny tiny lines right now
- 01:48
and...
- 01:49
They tell him to zero in on the lines at 1/4 and 1/12, which are a little taller…
- 01:53
And the 1/8 line in the middle of the inch is taller still.
- 01:56
They tell Aiden that he should just measure the front and back to the nearest 1/4 or 1/8
- 02:01
of an inch.
- 02:02
Aiden does and sees that the front and back are both 12 and 1/8 inches wide. [Aiden using the ruler]
- 02:06
Boom.
- 02:07
Now Aiden knows how to cut the wrapping paper.
- 02:09
Not so fast…the Ruler Renegades tell him.
- 02:11
While they’re here, they have to also teach him how convert inches to feet.
- 02:14
Aiden isn’t sure why that matters to him right now, but the Renegades say it doesn’t [Aiden looking confused]
- 02:17
matter.
- 02:18
They have to do it.
- 02:19
It’s in their contract.
- 02:20
The Renegades tell Aiden it’s easy to convert inches to feet.
- 02:22
There’s 12 inches in a foot.
- 02:23
All he has to do is put the number of inches over 12.
- 02:25
So if we wanted to convert say 18 inches into feet, we’d put 18 over 12.
- 02:31
If we reduce that fraction like this…
- 02:33
It comes to 1 and 6/12
- 02:35
And if we reduce it more like this…
- 02:39
It comes to 1 and 1/2.
- 02:41
So 18 inches equals 1 and 1/2 feet.
- 02:44
Their job complete, the Ruler Renegades disappear in a ball of flame. [After an explosion the Renegades vanish]
- 02:47
And Aiden can finally finish cutting out the wrapping paper.
- 02:49
Everything is great until he decides to wrap the bottom and turns the farm over onto the [Aiden flips over the farm and drops it]
- 02:53
ground.
- 02:54
So, ultimately, it’s a bad day for Aiden, but his sister’s birthday may have been saved. [Maggot crawling towards the birthday cake]
