Copyright Law
- 00:09
a la Shmoop
- 00:12
So why do we have these laws?
Full Transcript
- 00:13
I mean, when I think about them...
- 00:15
If we didn't have the laws,
- 00:18
there'd be no incentive for people to create
- 00:21
proprietary, cool ideas.
- 00:23
How do copyright laws protect intellectual property?
- 00:27
So copyright is the word that we usually throw around.
- 00:32
It's actually one portion of intellectual property.
- 00:35
So intellectual property is this broad idea
- 00:37
that you own the exclusive rights to an idea.
- 00:39
And then the copyright is one of those rights.
- 00:43
It is the right to copy.
- 00:48
There are a lot of other rights that go along with intellectual property.
- 00:51
Copyright is the one where it says,
- 00:53
"You own this idea. You can do literally whatever you want with it.
- 00:56
You can copy it, you can redistribute it, et cetera."
- 00:59
If someone else says, "Hey, I wanna post
- 01:02
this on my site,"
- 01:04
they have to get your permission,
- 01:05
because they do not have the right to copy it.
- 01:08
So they have to get your permission
- 01:09
and pay for it.
- 01:14
Why are copyright laws controversial?
- 01:17
The issue you're bringing up is the divide between
- 01:20
what people like to call "copyrighters" and "copylefters."
- 01:23
So the copyrighters are --
- 01:25
And that's not copy "write," that's copy "right."
- 01:30
The copyrighters are the folks who think
- 01:32
that we should be very strict with copyright laws.
- 01:36
That if someone comes up with an idea,
- 01:38
that if someone else copies it, they should be severely punished.
- 01:43
Which would basically mean
- 01:45
anyone who ever posted anything on YouTube would be in jail.
- 01:48
So that's the one extreme.
- 01:49
The other extreme are the copylefters,
- 01:52
who are the folks who play fast and loose with these rules.
- 01:54
And they say, "Oh, what's the harm?
- 01:57
Ideas are ideas. We're trying to generate new
- 02:00
and great things. How can we do that if there's
- 02:03
super strict laws?
- 02:04
So if you wanna take Star Wars and make something out of it, great.
- 02:08
Put it on the Internet. That's great."

- 02:11
The big divide is whether or not we should be able to just
- 02:15
take everything we want and
- 02:17
live in harmony
- 02:18
or if we should be respecting these laws
- 02:21
to the fullest.
- 02:23
Copyright law is in the Constitution.
- 02:25
Yeah, how so? Which amendment was that?
- 02:27
That's a great question. Editors, put that up on the screen.
