Determination
- 00:05
a la Shmoop
- 00:06
Sally makes a mean sloppy joe. [woman making a burger on a grill]

One day, Sally's uncle Moe

- 00:11
says, "You should open a restaurant and sell these things."
- 00:14
Sally's interested but she's also seen the stats.
- 00:17
She knows that 90% of restaurants
- 00:19
fail in the first year. [a lady chef crying]
- 00:20
But maybe, just maybe,
- 00:22
Sally's dogged determination will make
- 00:25
her one of the lucky few to survive.
- 00:27
She saves up all of her babysitting money,
- 00:29
buys a little roadside stand and voila -
- 00:32
the official home of Sloppy Sal's is born. [a name board with the sign -Sloppy Sal's]
- 00:35
It's got one cheap stove, no seating,
- 00:37
and no parking, but, hey, it's the best she can do.
- 00:40
Plus Sally's pretty smart.
- 00:41
She advertises her new place on social media,
- 00:44
offering giveaways, discounts,
- 00:45
and other promotions to anyone who comes out
- 00:47
to visit her stand, hoping that'll generate a lot more business. [Sloppy Sal's advertisement on Facebook offering discounts]
- 00:51
Well, within the week, she gets a few customers,
- 00:53
and Sally makes them a deal.
- 00:54
If they review her stand online,
- 00:56
she'll throw in a free soda.
- 00:58
Hey, a deal's a deal.
- 00:59
The customers agree and give her a few five-star reviews
- 01:02
because this place is good. [Reviews of customers on Facebook]
- 01:04
And even though Sally struggles to make money
- 01:06
for a few months, she doesn't give up.
- 01:07
Pretty soon, weary travelers who heard about her stand online
- 01:10
start showing up looking for decent grub.
- 01:13
As Sally starts getting more and more customers,
- 01:14
her positive reviews skyrocket.
- 01:17
And with it, her income. [Sloppy Sal's rating, shooting high on yulp]
- 01:18
Pretty soon, her little stand is bustling.
- 01:21
Sally has a feeling that, with a little more hard work,
- 01:24
she can make Sloppy Sal's a fast food giant.
- 01:27
She expands to a second location,
- 01:29
this one in a busier part of town.
- 01:31
She also writes a jingle
- 01:33
and puts it on the radio, telling folks to [a family going for a drive]
- 01:35
[ sing-song ] come on down to Sloppy Sal's.
- 01:37
It's the sloppy you just can't copy.
- 01:39
With her sharp business skills and determination,
- 01:42
pretty soon, the second Sloppy Sal's
- 01:44
yields a third, fourth, fifth, sixth,
- 01:47
until one day, a big business
- 01:49
asks Sally if she'd be interested [man talking to a woman about incorporating her business]
- 01:51
in making her little roadside stand
- 01:53
into a full-blown franchise.
- 01:55
Well, fast forward a few years.
- 01:56
Sloppy Sal's is a national chain and Sally's living the good life.
- 02:00
Sally's determination to see her business succeed
- 02:02
made her work harder and make smart decisions. [man and a woman gardening together]
- 02:05
If she'd started Sloppy Sal's
- 02:06
with no desire to see it grow,
- 02:08
chances are she would've gone under in a month.
- 02:11
But Sally knew what she wanted and was determined
- 02:13
to make it happen. Maybe your goal isn't
- 02:15
to start a fast food franchise [woman wanting to clean her messy room]
- 02:17
of sloppy joes.
- 02:18
In fact, it probably isn't.
- 02:20
But if Sally can make her dream come true
- 02:22
with determination and a catchy jingle,
- 02:24
we're pretty sure anyone can.
- 02:26
Yeah, well, even without the jingle. [a man next to a piano and other musical instruments]
