Description:

We tried watching calories once, but they barely did anything. What a waste of a weekend. We'll stick to counting them from here on.

[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

Food has many different uses… [A plate of melon, orange and lime chunks]

00:15

It can be a source of comfort...nothing like cuddling up with our pals Ben and Jerry after

00:19

a tough day…

00:20

…it can be a weapon of war…

00:22

…and it can even be the ultimate payback to your brother for wearing your favorite

00:25

pair of sneakers without asking. [Brother throws pie into brothers face]

00:26

…Huh.

00:27

We guess that's still kind of a weapon of war.

00:29

But its most important use?

00:31

Drum roll please…and maybe a drum stick, please… [Drum roll and chicken drum sticks appear]

00:34

…as a source of energy!

00:36

If we were cars, food would be our gasoline.

00:39

We need it to run.

00:40

Well, not just run. [Mother chasing her son in park]

00:41

To walk, to talk, to think, to speak.

00:43

And to throw cream pies at siblings. [Big brother on the floor with cream pie in his face]

00:46

Basically, food provides us with the energy we need to function.

00:49

Of course, humans are a pretty smart bunch, and some fancy scientists actually figured

00:53

out a way to calculate the exact amount of energy that a food contains. [Scientists working in a lab]

00:57

They called it….Frank.

00:59

…Just kidding.

01:00

They called them calories.

01:01

You know, those things that your parents always seem to be watching.

01:03

We don't know why.

01:05

Seems pretty boring…

01:06

Anyway, scientists use a tool called a calorimeter to measure the amount of [Dino discussing calorimeter]

01:10

calories in any given food.

01:12

The calorimeter figures out how many calories there are in food by pretending to be the

01:15

human body and slowly burning through the calories, or energy, at a steady and measurable rate.

01:21

This tells us how many calories there are. [Calorie content circled on food label]

01:23

But not all calories are equal.

01:26

See, there are good calories and there are bad calories.

01:30

Good calories can be found in the kind of food that you'd probably consider to be healthy.

01:34

Think fruits, vegetables, nuts, healthy meat, whole wheat bread – y'know, the stuff your [Selection of vegetables, nuts and meats]

01:38

mom would definitely prefer you be eating all the time.

01:41

These “good calorie" foods are considered good because they contain a ton of the vitamins,

01:46

minerals, and fiber that the body needs to stay healthy. [Coop eating corn]

01:49

These foods also tend to fill you up pretty easily, so you don't need to eat as many calories [Girl with huge plate of vegetables]

01:53

before you feel full.

01:55

Bad calories, on the other hand, are found in soda, candy, potato chips, fast-food and

01:59

all the junk food you can imagine.

02:01

These are considered “bad” calorie foods because they don't have many nutrients, and

02:05

are often extremely high in calories despite not really filling you up. [Dino eating junk food]

02:09

Which in turn, means you eat way, way more than you need to.

02:12

And what happens when you eat more calories than your body needs to burn to keep you energized? [Man laid on a sofa eating chips and drinking soda]

02:16

Well, your pants go from looking like this...

02:19

To this...

02:20

Eating too many calories can cause you to gain weight, while eating too few can cause

02:24

you to feel tired and unable to focus. [Man falls over in a park]

02:27

That's why it's important to eat healthy foods and understand calories so that you can eat

02:30

the right amount!

02:31

Thankfully for you, being a kid means that you're constantly growing, so you're allowed [Little girls eating pizza slices]

02:35

to eat way more calories than most other people since you need all that energy to grow.

02:39

Enjoy all those nuts and veggies!

02:41

…Okay, and maybe the occasional bowl of ice cream. [Boy with bowl of nuts and veges and bowl of ice cream appears]

02:44

…Don't tell your parents we said that.
