You never know in this economy. Chances are you'll need to do some jewelry repair alongside jewelry designing, but you can handle that, right? We all do things we don't really want to do from time to time. It's all worth it if your glamorous accessories keep selling.

You'll also have to keep up with the advances in technology. If you always stay one step ahead of what computers can do, you'll never be replaced. They might be able to cut, assemble, and polish pieces with ever quicker and more precise methods, but the designs still come from that zany, artistic brain of yours.

As for self-employment: as hard as it is to make a name for yourself, the demand for custom and boutique jewelry is holding pretty strong these days. Like…Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson-strong. To hang on in the jewelry game, you'll have to work at it. You've gotta want it. But, if you put the effort in, you can make it. And if you need inspiration, just look to Dwayne—is there any better example of someone who reinvents himself when the pressure's on?
