Odds of Getting In
So you've mastered the double chain stitch, huh? Too bad you still won't get a job. There are fewer than 60,000 tailors in the U.S. right now, which seems like a lot until you consider that the vast majority are low-wage workers.
Slightly above half of those tailors work in retail stores, dry-cleaners, or department stores. Unfortunately, the pay's not great, and at an estimated one percent growth, there aren't going to be many new jobs out there (source).
If you try to make it on your own, technically you've already gotten in. Over forty percent of tailors are currently self-employed (source). But in today's economy, when people buy ready-made clothes and aren't willing to spend extra money or time to get them into perfect shape, tailors are starting to go the way of video store rental clerks. Hopefully you won't get Netflixed any time soon.
