Majoring in the arts is risky business. People will bug you, mock you, and harass you about whether you'll be able to find a job. Your parents will worry about your college debt. You'll also probably hear the term "starving musician" at least five times a week.
Yeah, the numbers aren't particularly uplifting, with the unemployment rate being quite high and the typical salaries being below average for other college majors. There is a far-off light, however, that can be your saving grace, and it should come as no surprise. Majoring in music should be about passion.
If you love what you do, be it performing or teaching, your happiness will be right there with you. This means that if you're risking a low-paying job and being lucky to have it, you either need to be really good at what you do, or really enjoy it. The whole starving artist thing could be a part of your future, but hey, that's good character-building, right?
