Common Core Standards
Grade 3
Language L.3.2.F
Use spelling patterns and generalizations (e.g., word families, position-based spellings, syllable patterns, ending rules, meaningful word parts) in writing words.
Earlier in these standards, we have students learning about irregular verbs, but you know what makes an irregular verb irregular? The fact that it doesn't fit a pattern. Teach the patterns that help govern the majority of our linguistic structure. Point out those similarities in spelling and rhyme patterns, create endings for words, and make sure they can identify the meaty part of a word.
