Common Core Standards

Grade 1

Reading RF.1.3.C

Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds.

First graders should know that long vowel sounds can be produced by

(1) a silent final -e at the end of the word like snake
(2) an open syllable ending with a vowel like me
(3) common vowel digraphs like ea, ee, oa, and ai (beach, seed, boat, and train)

If you haven't heard, English pronunciation has its "quirks" so making sure young readers start learning 'em early will make for an easier time down the road.
