Common Core Standards
Grade 6
Writing W.6.5
With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1-3 up to and including grade 6 here.)
This Common Core Standard basically says that students should be going through some sort of planning and revision process. Don't forget to enlist the help of adults and classmates during this process—the more the merrier!
Example 1
Here's a lesson to use when focusing on improving students' writing process and results.
Have students choose an essay they have previously written and use several tools and strategies to revise the paper. They should receive teacher feedback, use a coach (parent or mentor), and complete a peer conference with a classmate or writer their own age to obtain additional feedback. Strategies such as sentence blocking, counting active verbs, and reading backwards should also be practiced to develop and strengthen the essay.
