As antagonists go, a giant, disembodied, pulsating, mind-controlling brain is a pretty tough one to have to go up against. And it's not just the fact that IT wants to consume other minds like a kid wants to suck down Popsicles: IT's entire way of being is antagonistical to Meg and her friends. While Meg just wants to find her dad and go home, IT – and the Black Thing IT is connected to – wants to destroy any meaningful idea of family, home, and individuality. IT is opposed not only to Meg personally, but also to what Meg stands for: the idea that imperfect humanity is preferable to flawless, soulless conformity.
