We don't need to say a ton about this – the two cousins are foils for each other, and their differences highlight the difference between the old-fashioned girl (Bernice) and the modern one (Marjorie). Fitzgerald is interested in the somewhat awkward redefinition of femininity that was occurring in his time, and these two characters sum it up nicely.
