• Enid is married to Alfred and they have three kids: Gary, Chip, and Denise.
• Their children now adults, Enid and Alfred live alone in St. Jude. Their marriage grows more hostile by the day, especially because Alfred is suffering from several physical and neurological conditions.
• With her children scattered across the East Coast, Enid decides that she wants everyone home in St. Jude for Christmas.
• She and Alfred go on a cruise that year. While at sea, Enid meets a woman named Sylvia Wroth who opens up to her about some deep, dark personal issues.
• Enid grows increasingly frustrated with Alfred's late-night hallucinatory freak-outs, so she goes to the infirmary where she is given a drug called Aslan that supposedly blocks feelings of shame.
• She takes the pills and the effects are instantaneous. She's no longer frustrated or embarrassed by Alfred—she doesn't even get embarrassed when Alfred falls off the ship and they're airlifted back to shore.
• Luckily, Alfred is okay. Enid schedules a ten-day drug holiday for Alfred—he needs to cleared of dementia and Alzheimer's in order to qualify for an experimental drug called Correcktall.
• Gary and Denise are set to arrive for Christmas. Chip calls at the last minute to tell her that he's coming home from Lithuania just in the nick of time.
• Enid tries to put on the perfect Christmas, but Gary is a grump and Denise seems upset about something.
• After seeing the way that Alfred acts around the kids, Enid finally admits that there's little hope for him.
• Chip shows up on Christmas morning, and Enid is overjoyed, but then Gary storms out after breakfast, which takes the wind out of Enid's sails.
• Alfred is diagnosed with dementia and sent to live at an assisted care center soon after. He dies after going on a hunger strike.
• Enid finally feels free—she realizes she was wrong to ever expect change from Alfred. For the first time (at least since we've known her) she's optimistic about the future.
