Sample of Challenges & Opportunities
The big challenge in teaching this novel is going to be asking your students to care about Victorian Society. How will you interest them in 19th century social norms? Will they expect you to serve them tea and cookies during every reading?
We can't answer that second question, but we can tell you: students will become interested in the book pretty quickly once they compare Thackeray's social mores and expectations to the ones around them. Anything you can do to draw parallels to the present will help students place things in context and find relevance in what Thackeray has to say.
