Here's your Shmoop du jour, brought to you by exclamations. Or rather, EXCLAMATIONS!!!

00:14

How should you change the below sentence to make it correct, if at all?

00:18

"Look out," he shouted. "Do not come near."

00:25

Question marks and exclamation points have more in common than you might think.

00:30

Just as with question marks, exclamation points should apply to a direct exclamation.

00:36

In a sentence like the one we've got here, the fact that this guy shouted in alarm doesn't

00:40

require an exclamation point, but his actual warning should be punctuated to reflect its tone.

00:46

With this in mind, we can eliminate (A) because the comma after "Look out" doesn't communicate

00:51

the fact that the guy is shouting.

00:54

If this one were right, it'd be a pretty lackluster shout to say the least.

00:58

(B) manages to get an exclamation point in at the end of the second sentence, which isn't

01:03

necessarily wrong.

01:04

But like (A), it's guilty of not punctuating the guy's shouting with enough oomph.

01:08

(C) gets an exclamation point a little closer to where it needs to be, but not quite close

01:12

enough.

01:13

By putting the exclamation point after "he said," it makes it seem like someone is shouting

01:18

about somebody shouting.

01:21

And by leaving the comma after "Look out" it makes it seem like the shouting that the

01:25

person is shouting about is pretty unimpressive.

01:29

The description of him shouting isn't a direct exclamation, so we can get choice (C) out

01:33

of our lives.

01:34

Choice (D) puts the oomph smack dab on the direct exclamation, making it the right answer.

01:40

It's important to remember to exclaim at the appropriate moment; otherwise we might get

01:44

into some awkward situations.
