Melting Pot or Mixed Salad… America’s Food Fight.

00:13

Watch your head!

00:16

I warned ya.

00:17

So… as you might have surmised, my friends and I are having a bit of a food fight.

00:23

There’s nothing that makes you feel quite as good as nailing a buddy in the back of

00:26

the head with a rack of lamb.

00:30

Of course, we’re fortunate.

00:32

We live in a day and age when we can afford to waste food for a little… entertainment.

00:37

Some of my ancestors weren’t so lucky.

00:39

Back when my forefathers started coming to this country…

00:42

…there was still a lot of disagreement over the whole “equal rights” issue.

00:46

It wasn’t just blacks who were discriminated against…

00:50

Irish, Polish, Jewish… the list goes on.

00:54

It was like America was an exclusive club,

00:57

and the majority of the population was trespassing on private grounds.

01:10

I can think of a number of reasons we might have been so shunned.

01:14

For one thing, people were afraid of alien invasion.

01:19

Nah, not those guys.

01:20

People were just afraid of an attack from a foreign country, and they felt they couldn’t

01:24

trust anyone with the hint of an accent. Plus, our cultures are quite different, and

01:28

Americans have always tended to steer clear of what they don’t understand.

01:32

Which I suppose is why so many of them opt out of taking a Calculus class in college.

01:41

About the time my grandmom and grandpop came over to the States…

01:45

…things were even better for Black Americans than they were for us Irish folk, if you can

01:49

wrap your melon around that idea.

01:54

They could at least get some menial work…

01:56

…but there were more “No Irish Need Apply” signs hanging about than you can shake a potato at.

02:03

My family… and many others… were forced into tenements when they arrived.

02:15

This bottom-of-the-line housing wasn’t just dingy and cold… it was unsanitary and unsafe.

02:22

Much more dangerous than throwing around a bit of bacon and cabbage, I’ll tell ya that much.

02:26

The immigrant population grew in a hurry… and with no nice places for them to live…

02:30

…the conditions in major cities turned into some major slums.

02:34

You thought East St. Louis was bad? With all the poverty, crime grew as well…

02:39

…but it wasn’t just because people were bad.

02:42

Many of them were starving and trying to feed their families.

02:49

If you tie a chicken in a coop for long enough, sooner or later

02:51

he’s going to try to bite your leg clean off.

02:53

As my grandpop used to say.

02:55

We like to refer to this country as a Melting Pot or Mixed Salad…

03:01

…a place where people of all ethnicities and backgrounds

03:03

can come together and live as equals.

03:08

But it wasn’t always that way, and… in fact… still isn’t today in many ways.

03:13

For example, now that the authorities are breaking up this little food fight of ours…

03:17

…they’re not treating us all that wonderfully.

03:21

But at least we’re not getting kicked back across a border.

03:25

Now there’s some pie on your face.
