20-Year Prospect
You may think of mining as a 20th century job that we won't need in the 21st. Aren't mining inspectors a thing of the past, like the Microsoft Zune or parachute pants? You're likely thinking of mining as primarily looking for coal. And it is that, but that's not the only thing humans dig deep into the earth for.
Our communications technology may have advanced to the point where we have Wi-Fi connectivity everywhere, but many parts of those gadgets, from the cases to the hardware to the batteries, have components we can only get by making them out of elements deep within the Earth's crust.
Mining as a profession is definitely dropping in popularity, but as long as people need to venture into the earth, we're going to need someone to make sure it's safe. You'll probably be fine for the next twenty years.
