Language L.4.4.C
Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.
Using references is a requirement for a solid education. You're already covering this substandard in the Common Core Standards for Writing, but this reinforcement is here to ensure that you're fully introducing your students to reference materials. Unfamiliar words and phrases are bound to happen—they're part of reading comprehension. But if you hand your students the requisite skills to find the meaning on their own, they'll have a great start to the rest of their education.
