Common Core Standards

Grade 5

Language L.5.5.C

Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better understand each of the words.

While L.4.5.C dictates that students should understand synonyms and antonyms by the fourth grade, fifth graders are expected to expand that knowledge base by adding homographs—words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently—to the mix.
