Common Core Standards
Grade 5
Reading RL.5.4
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.
As we move away from simply learning vocabulary words with each new reading, it's now time to introduce figurative language to students, which is the purpose of this Common Core standard. They've probably been seeing it all over the place already, so it should be a piece of cake to formally introduce the concept of figurative language to them.
