trade my day if anybody's bad day Seriously that guy
- 00:35
who wakes up a little call me we'll talk Let
- 00:39
me just give you the full rundown to work up
- 00:42
an appropriate amount For starters i look up and there's
- 00:46
gum in my hair Okay doesn't sound too bad but
- 00:49
i said for starters my sticky disgusting hairdo was the
- 00:53
best part of my day I tried getting out of
- 00:56
bed but my skateboard sit in there and i tried
- 00:58
on my mother's always telling me to put that thing
- 01:01
away So please don't tell her about it All she
- 01:03
needs is more ammunition Then at breakfast both my brothers
- 01:08
anson and nick found these awesome amazing prizes in their
- 01:12
cereal Me Oh no just cereal I'd better never run
- 01:17
into tony the tiger dark alley late at night I'll
- 01:20
just say that Okay that was my morning Didn't get
- 01:24
any better after i got to school Mrs dickens was
- 01:27
all up in my business Her first She tells me
- 01:30
she doesn't like my drawing of invisible castle looks like
- 01:33
somebody needs to work on their imagination And then she
- 01:38
got on my case about not saying sixteen I'm counting
- 01:41
Not that she cares but i have a few personal
- 01:44
issues with that number but i'd rather not talk about
- 01:47
it In short if the hotel can leave off thirteen
- 01:51
slower biggs of some silly superstition I certainly think i'm
- 01:55
within my rights After school i had a dentist appointment
- 01:59
which pretty much sticks of camp right there And of
- 02:02
course i have a cavity So that's fun I also
- 02:05
had an elevator door closed my foot And then one
- 02:08
of my stupid brother's got me in trouble for it
- 02:11
in my other stupid brother Which is in a word
- 02:14
stupid So what's for dinner meets a cheeseburgers maybe Uh
- 02:20
no Try lima beans This is abuse right there Number
- 02:25
i can call my wonderful day still wasn't over I
- 02:30
got to take a bath that was basically all of
- 02:32
my worst nightmares come true I bit my tongue and
- 02:35
i can guarantee you i'm going to be biting that
- 02:37
same spot for a week and one final act of
- 02:41
betrayal to round Things out A cat decides to sleep
- 02:43
Was anthony who was literally a butt face So yeah
- 02:49
i told my mom i want to move to australia
- 02:52
She says people down under have bad days too cool
- 02:55
looking no more vegemite I guess i never really thought
- 02:58
about it that way before Yeah my day was terrible
- 03:01
Horrible No good very bad But it's not like i've
- 03:04
cornered the market on bad days all over the world
- 03:07
Kids are getting gum stuck in their hair and eye
- 03:09
closing their feet in elevator doors Not that that's going
- 03:12
to stop me from complaining obviously And that's how the
- 03:16
book ends It leaves alexander and you know the reader
- 03:20
without a resolution No happy ending No Tomorrow will be
- 03:23
better Not even And it could be worse than nothing
- 03:27
but that's Kind of the point The author judith the
- 03:30
orthe knows what she's doing She wants the readers children
- 03:33
and adults to realize that hey everyone has bad days
- 03:36
that's just life no one has it in for you
- 03:39
unless you've upset the wrong people So if the book
- 03:44
is such a downer why do you people love it
- 03:46
so much Is it just that misery loves company Well
- 03:49
no To be honest misery doesn't love anything Kids get
- 03:53
emotionally invested in the story while grown ups get to
- 03:55
feel good about what their kids are learning And while
- 03:58
kids were reading about alexander's bad day there presumably in
- 04:01
a better mood than he is meaning they think about
- 04:03
how he could solve his problems see how his reactions
- 04:06
or maybe a little over the top and come up
- 04:09
with ways for him to cope with all the crappy
- 04:10
stuff That's happened to us As it turns out learning
- 04:13
these strategies for dealing with terrible horrible no good very
- 04:16
bad days pays off In the long run we're talking
- 04:18
better grades in school better jobs And while just general
- 04:21
happiness That's right Building character is actually nothing Oh great
- 04:27
just what i needed to make my day even worse 00:04:30.728 --> [endTime] a lecture Colicky
