Description:

This video provides a summary of the dystopian novel Divergent. It covers Beatrice Prior’s path from discovering she is Divergent (doesn’t fit neatly into one of the categories of her society) to reinventing herself as Tris in Dauntless, the brave faction, to stopping Erudite from making the Dauntless into Abnegation-killers. Plus, there’s some crazy challenges—what else can you expect from the faction that values bravery?

Dont you just love a happy ending

00:00

Divergent a la Shmoop.

00:02

Beatrice Prior here and Im from Chicago.

00:04

No not that Chicago. THIS Chicago.

00:07

Yeah I live in the future.

00:09

Wicked right So stuff has changed since back in the day.

00:13

Now the city is divided into five groups Abnegation Amity Candor Dauntless and Erudite.

00:17

The members of each group are charged with upholding a different virtue.

00:21

I was born into Abnegation which is sworn to protect selflessness.

00:24

Which isnt easy Ill be honest I kinda like myself.

00:27

One day each year every 16-year-old in the land gets together and takes a test

00:32

that determines which group theyre going to wind up in.

00:35

Very Harry Potter-Sorting Hat-type stuff.

00:37

Wouldnt be surprised if Dumbledore popped out from behind a curtain.

00:41

We get to either stick with the fam or branch off in a new direction.

00:45

Unfortunately for me I didnt fit neatly into just one category.

00:49

Nah my results put me somewhere in Abnegation/Erudite/Dauntless territory.

00:52

But because it was inconclusive I was labeled divergent.

00:55

Youd think it would be a great thing to be a jack of all trades

00:59

but not around here.

01:01

Im not even supposed to tell anyone Im divergent.

01:04

Honestly Id rather have been diagnosed with the measles.

01:07

On Choosing Day I threw everyone for a loop and joined forces with Dauntless the

01:12

group that was all about bravery.

01:14

My brother Caleb went with Erudite. Nerd.

01:17

A new faction deserves a new name so I christened myself Tris.

01:21

Its a cool name in the future just trust me.

01:24

I met some chill peeps in the new digs namely Christina Al and Will.

01:28

And of course my story wouldnt be complete without a few jerks to keep things interesting.

01:33

This guy Peter and a couple of his friends were on my case the whole

01:37

time always telling me I didnt belong.

01:40

Ah well no biggie.

01:42

Just need to get a hold of a voodoo doll thats all.

01:45

And thenschool was in session.

01:48

We were taught by someone named Four.

01:50

Yeah Tris isnt sounding so weird anymore is it We were told we had to

01:55

pass an initiation.

01:57

If we didnt wed get kicked out and would have no faction.

02:00

So no pressure.

02:02

The name of the game was bravery and there was to be no backing down.

02:06

We had to fight each other with guns and knives.

02:10

Did I mention that play time was over But elsewhere trouble was stirring.

02:14

The gang over in Erudite were rousing some rabble They had started making some pretty

02:18

serious accusations about a couple of the folks from Abnegation including someone in the government

02:22

whom they accused of abusing his son andmy own parents.

02:26

The reports suggested that my brother and I were raised poorly because we both abandoned

02:30

our original faction.

02:32

On the upsideat least they avoided any nasty physical abuse charges look on the bright

02:36

side right So while all that was going on we moved into simulations where we

02:40

had to face various fears.

02:43

Please dont let it be spiders please dont let it be spiders I pretty much

02:47

owned the simulations in part thanks to the whole Divergent thing which gives me some mad skills.

02:52

Of course there will always be haters.

02:54

Peter Al and this guy Drew attacked and tried to dispose of me but Four

02:59

came to my rescue.

03:01

Al felt bad about it after the fact butI sure wasnt about to forgive that two-timer.

03:05

Apparently he took that a bit hard because he killed himself by leaping into a chasm.

03:10

Which majorly bummed me out.

03:12

Our final phase of the initiation was the fear landscape.

03:15

Sounds like a painters worst nightmare.

03:18

Here we got to face a combination of all our greatest fears.

03:22

Because I was in tight with Four by now he actually gave me a leg

03:26

up by letting me into HIS fear landscape.

03:29

I also found out that his real name was Tobias and that he was the

03:33

son of that Abnegation leader whod been accused of abusing hisson.

03:37

Ah all the pieces were coming together There were seven fears in my fear landscape

03:41

including drowning being on fire being eaten alive by crows you know the usual.

03:45

Wouldnt you know it when all was said and done I was ranked first Thats

03:49

the good news the bad news is that right after the test Erudite had each

03:54

of us injected with a serum that would make us attack Abnegation.

03:57

But lets focus on whats important FIRST people This serum was intended to turn us

04:02

all into mindless zombies but fortunately it doesnt work on us Divergent folk. i.e.

04:06

me and Tobias.

04:08

We tried to make our getaway but those Erudite guys are TOUGH. For nerds.

04:12

They captured us injected Tobias with a new serum that would override his Divergence and

04:16

sentenced me to death.

04:18

Man I ALWAYS get the short end of the stick.

04:21

But just when things were looking their bleakest my mommy saved the day Guess I

04:26

got the Divergent thing from her because she was one too Her own mad skills

04:30

allowed her to rescue me from my glass cage and we made a break for it.

04:34

But seems like my good news always comes with a dose of crappy.

04:38

While making our escape my mom was shot and killed.

04:42

No time to shed tears though I tracked down my dad my brother and Tobias

04:46

dad and the four of us made tracks back to Dauntless to see if we

04:50

could put a stop to this thing.

04:53

Ready for more crappy My dad was killed too.

04:56

Now Im a Divergent orphan which is like THE WORST.

04:59

Anyway we found Tobias who was under the spell of that new serum and he

05:04

tried to end me.

05:06

But he shook himself awake at the last second and I was spared.

05:10

Together we were able to stop Operation Kill Everyone ridding my fellow Dauntless peeps from

05:14

their mind control.

05:16

Then a bunch of us hopped a train out of town to see if we

05:20

could find any other survivors. NOTE end of file
